Majority In Favour Of Free Travel For Women In Delhi: Aap | Delhi News
NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday said Delhi government’s proposal to provide free travel to women in public transport was getting a “phenomenal response” from people. In a statement on Sunday, AAP said its legislators, municipal councillors and the women wing had so far conducted more than 200 consultations with the public and over 95% people had supported the idea.
“On the directions of chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, we began public meetings on June 8. Over 200 such meetings have been held across the city over the weekend and AAP has received phenomenal support from people on the proposal to make public transport free for women,” the party said in a statement. “Over 95% of the people surveyed are in favour of the scheme. The support among women is 100%.”
AAP said the popular perception was that with easier access to the metro, women would have a secure environment to travel and it would enable them to go to far-flung locations for employment hassle-free.
Kejriwal has asked AAP MLAs and councillors to conduct 1,000 public meetings in seven days to garner feedback on the proposed free Delhi Metro and DTC bus rides for women in the city. The decision to carry out public consultations was taken a day after Union housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri had said Kejriwal had announced the scheme without making any preparations.
According to AAP leaders, every MLA and councillor had been asked to hold at least 10 small meetings in their respective areas. The assessment report will be submitted to the CM in a week.
AAP said the survey so far had revealed that women from the economically weaker sections, who were forced to use non-metro transport to travel to work and found them unsafe, were especially enthusiastic about the proposal.
“Delhi government will consider all such suggestions and feedback and incorporate them into the final plan after due assessment,” the party said.
