Centre Wants Delhi To Form Heatwave Action Plan | Delhi News
NEW DELHI: The ministry of environment, forests and climate change (MoEFCC) has submitted an affidavit to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), advising the Delhi government to incorporate a heatwave action plan for the capital as part of the Delhi state action plan on climate change.
The national steering committee on climate change at MoEFCC stressed on the need to look at a comprehensive action plan for long-term measures, which need to include preparations for an intense heatwave in the region. At present, Delhi is witnessing heatwave conditions in certain parts with a maximum temperature of 39.3 degrees Celsius recorded on Friday, five notches above normal for this season.
Heatwave conditions occur when the maximum temperature is at least four degrees above normal and even higher. Delhi government had submitted its state action plan in January. However, all long-term plans are passed through the MoEFCC. Officials said the changes were suggested in a recent meeting on the action plan. “The representatives of the Delhi government made a presentation on the state action plan on climate change. In the meeting, the importance of e-mobility and heatwave was highlighted by the members,” said an official, adding that specific directions on how to deal with sudden spikes in temperature would be given.
Earlier, Gaurav Bansal, the counsel appearing for the petitioner, had informed NGT that due to climate change, the capital was already facing problems like high temperature and instances of heatwave were increasing.
